Panic at the Picori Picknick
Solo game development - 2 week challenge
‘Panic at the Picori Picknick’ is the product of a 2 week game design challenge in which I had to make a spin-off game of ‘The Legend of Zelda” franchise. Since I wasn’t very familiar with these games, I did some digging and found out about ‘The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap.’
I bought it, played it for a bit and decided my spin-off had to be based off of this amazing game. Since it had to be a non-traditional Zelda-game, I wanted to take just some elements of ‘The Minish Cap’ and change its genre completely.
These elements turned out to be the Picori (or Minish), as well as the enemies you encounter in the original game. Not only was this a spin-off of the Zelda-franchise, but also of the tower defense-genre. I did not want to make it a standard, grid based TD-game, so I took a different approach. Since there was only a short amount of time to make this game (and I had to do it alone), I used Quixel Megascans to make the environment, (very quickly) modeled a Picori unit, gave it some textures and did the same for the enemy units. I added some post-processing materials to give it more of a cartoony look, made the UI system and implemented all the game logic I could within the time given.
